Mazda CX-7 installed with a FlexPED holder and the Audio Link iPod Connector

After the recent highly negative report we wrote last week on the “Genuine Mazda” iPod connector, We did not have high hopes that we would be able to get an iPod connector that would work as it should! If you have any late model Mazda vehicle (200? to current) this Audio Link kit from RPM is the connector for you! Not only does this connector allow total iPod functionality from the iPod itself, it does much more. With the FlexPED installed it allows easy user selection at the iPod and positioned conveniently right at your finger tips and out of the way.

Audio Link iPod integration Connector Kit for late model Mazda

The installation of the kit is very simple in CX-7 once the console bezel is removed. We used one of those razor blade holders followed by a plastic putty knife, so that we did not mar the bezel.

Removal of the radio and connecting the kit harness is pretty self explanatory, as easy as plugging it into the open connector port on the radio. We routed our harness so that the Audio Link interface box remains slightly exposed along the passenger side in a perfect spot between the console and glove box seam see thumbnail below. One reason we mounted it there with double sided tape is because the iPod wire itself is only about 3 feet and the other reason is that if you wanted to disconnect the iPod cable portion you can so very easily. Audio Link does give you the option to have an extra 1/8″ line out and/or video out on this same cable. That is very nice option for the on the go traveler in a hotel or those lucky enough to have a video input device in their vehicle… etc. We tucked those extra two wires conveniently behind the near by panel for a possible use at a later date.

Now the functionality, this kit went way beyond our wish list. We feel that if the integration (head unit control) cannot get close to the iPod functionality that a simple line-in access is all we would want. Well, Audio Link has taken this a step further than our wish, not only can you operate the iPod as you normally would from the iPod (something you can’t do with the “Genuine Mazda” kit see review) you can also track up/down the next song and FFW/RWD the current song from the head unit control (and steering wheel if you have that option). Skipping to the next track does cut of the first second of the song while using the head unit control*, but who cares at this point. We are just thankful you can use the iPod, if that bothers you so. We also noticed that the iPod equalizer also functions giving the CX-7 driver the ability to regain the high volume bass loss that is associated with this model, another big plus! We have a feeling that there are positive things we will find with setup later on, not that it is needed, we are EXTREMELY happy at this point.

This part we wonder if we should even mention at all. The Audio Link also gives the option to operate like the “Genuine Mazda kit” but that is only for savant syndrome people only. A simple tap of the DISC button ultimately removes all iPod functionality and transfers all menu/play/song/artist list to the head unit BUT in numeric form. If you can tell me what is on menu 16 of track 64 on your iPod this functionality is for you.

Note: During iPod functionality mode (the way normal people will use this) the head unit display does show continuous numeric counting (even if you pause the iPod). But who really cares what list and track number you are on anyway, just look at the iPod for the real text?

FlexPED Installed on CX-7

Installation is very simple, we located the prefect position for the iPod for viewing and accessibility without interfering with the glove boxe, cup holders, shifters and legs etc…

Once the location was decided we followed the AdPad instructions (using a blow dryer to activate the adhesive pad). AdPad is a non-residue, non-marring but permanent and removable way to attached the FlexPED. You can also use screw fasteners in the provided mounting of the base if you so wish. The base mount provides a 0, 30 and 90 degree mounting position prior to the flexible arm, making for any type of installations even upside down from the glass windshield if one desires. Another big feature the FlexPED has is the ability to be configured to an iPod or device that has a case or skin around it.

We are EXTREMELY pleased the way this completed our CX-7 installation (or other vehicle) and think you will be too.

Not only when you purchase a FlexPED (or any PED) from THOUGHT OUT…Co. and choose your FREE CD we will also supply a $15 discount code to RPM for the Mazda Audio Link iPod Integration with a FlexPED order from us. Please select this free coupon while selecting our FlexPED options.

* We were advise by RPM that not all iPods will skip the beginning of songs (when using the head unit controls), some of them do and some don’t. Some of your customers may not experience this. Again, we see this as a minor hiccup and simply suggest just using the iPod itself if it bothers the user.
